True lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) grown at altitude produces a fundamentally different oil to the lavandin hybrids that dominate the market. Our source in the Balkan Mountains of Bulgaria sits above 1,000 metres, where cooler temperatures slow the plant's growth and concentrate the ester content. The result is a linalyl acetate level of 42.1% and linalool at 31.8%, both at the high end of what this species produces. These two compounds are responsible for the majority of the oil's calming and skin-soothing activity. The harvest window is narrow, typically two to three weeks in July, and distillation begins within hours of cutting. The GC/MS report for the current batch is available to download on this page.
