Supply Chain Transparency in the Essential Oil Industry

Back to Journal 10 November 2025 6 min read

Most essential oil brands cannot tell you where their oils actually come from. Here is why that matters and what genuine transparency looks like.

The essential oil industry has a transparency problem. Most brands source their oils through brokers, who source from other brokers, who may or may not have a direct relationship with the original producer. By the time the oil reaches the consumer, the provenance information has often been lost or obscured.

The broker model

The majority of essential oils sold globally pass through at least two or three intermediaries between the distillery and the end consumer. Each intermediary adds a margin and, in some cases, blends batches from different sources to achieve a consistent price point. This is not inherently fraudulent, but it makes genuine traceability difficult.

What genuine traceability looks like

A brand with genuine supply chain transparency can tell you the country of origin, the region of origin, the species and botanical variety, the extraction method, the batch number, and the date of distillation or pressing. They can provide a GC/MS report from an independent laboratory that references the specific batch.

Certificates of origin

A certificate of origin is a document issued by the producer or a certifying authority that confirms the geographic origin of a product. It is a necessary but not sufficient condition for supply chain transparency. A certificate of origin does not tell you the compound profile of the oil, and it can be falsified.

Our approach

We work directly with producers where possible and through vetted brokers where direct relationships are not practical. For every batch, we require a GC/MS report from an independent laboratory, a certificate of origin, and documentation of the extraction method. We publish the GC/MS reports on our product pages. We do not claim perfect transparency, but we are committed to providing more information than most brands in this category.
