Rosehip Seed Oil: Fatty Acid Profile and Skin Benefits

Back to Journal 18 November 2025 6 min read

Rosehip seed oil is one of the most popular carrier oils in skincare. Here is what the fatty acid data actually shows about its properties.

Rosehip seed oil (Rosa canina) has been used in traditional medicine for centuries and has become one of the most popular carrier oils in contemporary skincare formulations. Its reputation rests primarily on its fatty acid composition, which is distinctive among common carrier oils.

The fatty acid profile

A typical cold-pressed rosehip seed oil contains approximately 35-45% linoleic acid (omega-6), 14-22% alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3), and 14-20% oleic acid (omega-9). This high polyunsaturated fatty acid content is unusual among plant oils and is responsible for both its beneficial properties and its relatively short shelf life.

Linoleic acid is an essential fatty acid that the skin cannot synthesise. Research has shown that topical application of linoleic acid can help restore the skin's barrier function, particularly in conditions where the barrier is compromised. It is also non-comedogenic and absorbs quickly, making it suitable for oily and combination skin types.

Trans-retinoic acid

Rosehip seed oil contains small amounts of trans-retinoic acid, a natural form of vitamin A. This has been cited as the reason for its efficacy in addressing hyperpigmentation and fine lines. The concentration is significantly lower than in pharmaceutical retinoid preparations, but the presence of this compound in a natural carrier oil is notable.

Shelf life and storage

The high polyunsaturated fatty acid content that makes rosehip seed oil effective also makes it prone to oxidation. Oxidised oil loses its beneficial properties and can become a skin irritant. Rosehip seed oil should be stored in amber glass, away from heat and light, and used within 6-12 months of opening. Our rosehip seed oil is cold-pressed and packaged in amber glass to maximise shelf life.
