Lavender True: A Complete Guide to Uses and Applications

Back to Journal 22 October 2025 7 min read

Lavender is the most versatile essential oil in most collections. Here is a comprehensive guide to its applications, from skincare to sleep to first aid.

Lavender True (Lavandula angustifolia) is the most widely used essential oil in the world, and for good reason. Its compound profile makes it genuinely versatile: it is one of the few essential oils that is well-tolerated at relatively low dilutions, has a broad range of documented applications, and blends well with almost everything.

Skincare applications

Lavender is well-suited to most skin types. At 1-2% in a carrier oil, it can be used as a general facial oil, a spot treatment for minor skin irritations, or a component in a body moisturiser. Its documented antimicrobial properties make it useful in formulations targeting acne, though the evidence base is less strong than for tea tree oil.

Sleep and relaxation

Lavender is the most studied essential oil for sleep support. Diffusing 3-5 drops in the bedroom for 30-60 minutes before sleep is the most common application. A diluted blend applied to the wrists and chest can provide a sustained aromatic effect through the night. The evidence for lavender's sleep-promoting effects is positive but primarily from small studies.

Minor burns and skin irritation

Lavender is one of the few essential oils that some aromatherapists recommend applying neat (undiluted) to very small areas, such as minor burns or insect bites. This is a traditional use that predates modern safety guidelines. For general use, diluting in a carrier oil is still recommended, but the risk of sensitisation from brief, occasional neat application to a small area is low for most people.

Blending

Lavender is a middle note that blends well with most other oils. It pairs particularly well with frankincense (for a grounding, meditative blend), eucalyptus (for a respiratory blend), and citrus oils (for a fresh, uplifting blend). Its linalool content means it can help smooth and round out blends that would otherwise be too sharp or too heavy.
