Why Jojoba Is Technically Not an Oil (and Why It Matters)

Back to Journal 15 October 2025 5 min read

Jojoba is classified as a liquid wax, not an oil. This distinction explains its exceptional stability and its compatibility with human skin.

Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) is commonly sold and described as an oil, but it is technically a liquid wax. This is not a semantic distinction. The difference in molecular structure between a wax ester and a triglyceride oil has real implications for how jojoba behaves on skin and how long it lasts in storage.

Wax esters versus triglycerides

Most plant oils are composed of triglycerides: three fatty acid chains attached to a glycerol backbone. Jojoba is composed primarily of wax esters: long-chain fatty acids bonded to long-chain fatty alcohols. This structure is much more resistant to oxidation than triglycerides, which is why jojoba has a shelf life of two or more years without refrigeration.

Similarity to human sebum

Human sebum contains a significant proportion of wax esters, which is unusual among mammals. The wax ester composition of jojoba closely resembles this component of sebum, which is proposed as one reason for its excellent skin compatibility and its ability to regulate sebum production. Research suggests that jojoba application may signal the skin to reduce its own sebum output, making it potentially useful for oily skin types.

Stability in formulations

For formulators, jojoba's stability is a significant practical advantage. It will not go rancid, it does not require antioxidant preservation, and it does not significantly alter the scent profile of essential oil blends. This makes it an ideal carrier for aromatherapy blends that need a long shelf life.

Cold-pressed versus refined

Cold-pressed jojoba retains its natural golden colour and faint nutty scent. Refined jojoba is colourless and odourless, which is preferable for some formulations. Both have the same wax ester composition and similar skin properties. Our Jojoba Golden is cold-pressed, which preserves the full spectrum of naturally occurring compounds.
