A Beginner's Guide to Essential Oil Blending

Back to Journal 1 March 2026 8 min read

Blending essential oils is part chemistry, part intuition. Here is a practical framework for creating balanced, effective blends.

Blending essential oils is one of the most rewarding aspects of working with aromatics. A well-constructed blend is more than the sum of its parts: the individual compounds interact to create a scent profile and a functional effect that none of the individual oils could achieve alone. This guide provides a practical framework for beginners.

The note system

The traditional perfumery concept of top, middle, and base notes provides a useful starting framework for blending. Top notes are the most volatile compounds, which you smell first but which dissipate quickly. Middle notes form the heart of the blend and last longer. Base notes are the least volatile, providing depth and longevity.

In essential oils, citrus oils (lemon, bergamot, orange) are typically top notes. Lavender, eucalyptus, and tea tree are middle notes. Frankincense, sandalwood, and vetiver are base notes. A balanced blend typically includes oils from each category.

Starting ratios

A common starting point for a personal blend is 30% top notes, 50% middle notes, and 20% base notes. This is a guideline, not a rule. Some blends work beautifully with a dominant base note and minimal top notes. The best way to develop your palate is to make small test batches and evaluate them over time, as the scent profile changes as the top notes dissipate.

Dilution

Before applying any blend to skin, dilute it in a carrier oil. A 2-3% dilution is appropriate for most adult body applications. For facial use, 0.5-1% is recommended. To calculate: a 2% dilution in 30ml of carrier oil requires approximately 12 drops of essential oil total (assuming 20 drops per ml).

Testing your blend

Make a small test batch before committing to a larger quantity. Apply a small amount to the inside of your wrist and evaluate the scent over 30 minutes. The initial impression (top notes) will be different from the dry-down (middle and base notes). Adjust your ratios based on what you observe.
