Where Australian Essential Oils Actually Come From

Back to Journal March 5, 2026 7 min read

Australia produces some of the world's most distinctive essential oils. Here is an honest look at the supply chain from farm to bottle.

Australia has a genuine advantage in essential oil production. The combination of climate diversity, unique endemic plant species, and a relatively small but technically sophisticated distillation industry means that Australian-sourced oils occupy a distinct position in the global market.

The main producing regions

Tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) is grown almost exclusively in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, around Ballina and Lismore. The industry is well-regulated and the Australian Tea Tree Industry Association maintains standards for terpinen-4-ol content, which is the primary active compound. A genuine Australian tea tree oil should show terpinen-4-ol at 35-48% and 1,8-cineole below 15%.

Eucalyptus is produced across a broader range of regions, from the tablelands of New South Wales to the high country of Victoria. Different regions produce slightly different compound profiles due to soil composition, altitude, and rainfall patterns.

Rosehip seed oil is primarily sourced from South Australia and Western Australia, where Rosa canina grows well in the Mediterranean-style climate. The cold-press extraction method preserves the high linoleic acid content (typically 35-45%) that makes rosehip a useful carrier for dry skin formulations.

The supply chain reality

Most essential oils sold in Australia are not produced in Australia. They are imported from France, India, Morocco, Madagascar, and other major producing countries, then bottled and labelled locally. This is not inherently a problem, but it does mean that "Australian brand" and "Australian sourced" are not the same thing.

We source our tea tree and eucalyptus from Australian producers. Our frankincense (Boswellia sacra) is sourced from Oman, where the resin has been harvested for thousands of years and the quality is demonstrably superior to African alternatives. Our lavender is sourced from Provence, France, where the altitude and climate produce a linalyl acetate content that Australian-grown lavender does not consistently achieve.

What we ask of our suppliers

Every supplier we work with must provide a GC/MS report for each batch, a certificate of origin, and confirmation of the extraction method. We do not accept summary certificates. If a supplier cannot provide the full analytical data, we do not use them.
